The Project Phases Every New Interior Design Studio Needs

Phases are not bureaucracy. They are how you stop every decision from happening at the same time.

SEQUENCE IS A DESIGN TOOL

One of the most useful things a new studio can learn is that not every question deserves an answer today.

Projects become exhausting when the designer is solving concept, technical details, procurement, and installation logistics in the same week. A phase structure creates permission to solve the right problem at the right time.

PHASE 01 · DISCOVERY

Define the problem. Confirm scope, investment, timeline, site conditions, decision-makers, and the way the client actually uses the space. Exit when the brief is clear enough to design against.

PHASE 02 · CONCEPT

Establish the governing direction. Spatial moves, material language, mood, key precedents, and major furniture or architectural gestures belong here. Exit when the client has approved one direction—not five partial directions.

PHASE 03 · DESIGN DEVELOPMENT

Turn direction into decisions. Refine layouts, elevations, millwork, lighting, finishes, fixtures and the primary FF&E. Confirm that the beautiful thing can work in the actual room.

PHASE 04 · DOCUMENTATION

Translate approved design into information others can price and build. Plans, elevations, details, schedules, and specifications belong here. Late aesthetic changes now have a cost because they ripple through coordinated information.

PHASE 05 · PROCUREMENT & CONSTRUCTION COORDINATION

Track orders, lead times, approvals, substitutions and site questions. The design is still alive, but the job of the studio shifts from inventing to protecting intent.

PHASE 06 · INSTALLATION & HANDOVER

Close the loop. Install, style, punch, document final conditions and hand the client the information they need to live with the work.

THE PRACTICE

Write one sentence that defines the purpose and exit condition of each phase in your own studio. Then attach every recurring task to one phase.

If a task has no home, that is often where the chaos begins.
